Killstreaks Guide

Modern Warfare 3 GuideIn this Modern Warfare 3 Assault Package killstreaks guide, we will be discussing the best strategies for using killstreaks in Modern Warfare 3.

If you do not know the basic function of each killstreak and the number of kills required for each killstreak, you can get a quick overview in our Modern Warfare 3 Killstreaks List. Instead of focusing on the basics here we will be going over specific strategies for selecting the right killstreaks for you.

Picking the Right Killstreak Rewards in Modern Warfare 3

When picking your killstreaks in Modern Warfare 3, you need to understand that your killstreaks should benefit each other. You want to try to chain them together so that one killstreak can beget the next rather than picking your favorite 3 killstreaks.

Note: Kills earned with Assault Killstreaks do count towards your next killstreak reward. You can chain killstreak rewards together. This is your goal in MW3 with the Assault Package.

Understand that your killstreaks do cycle through. This means that if you select UAV, Care Package, and Predator Missile, at 8 kills in a row you earn another UAV, at 9 kills a second care package, and at 10 kills a second Predator Missile.

You can make the most of these mechanics by stacking your killstreak rewards close together in the number of kills required. You can either shoot high or low, but never both high and low at the same time. You never want to pair easy killstreak rewards with high killstreak rewards unless you think these killstreaks will push you to the next level. In practice, while the UAV is a good killstreak, if you are a great player and think you can pick up the top killstreaks in-game, you have no reason to select the UAV as a reward.

In essence, going UAV --> AC-130 --> Osprey Gunner makes no sense. While the AC-130 can be used to unlock the Osprey Gunner, getting a UAV at 3 kills makes no sense. It is not really going to help you unlock the AC-130. Instead, you might consider Reaper --> AC-130 --> Osprey Gunner. This way, if you get a Reaper, you can be sure to use that to get enough kills for an AC-130, and then get enough kills with that for the Osprey Gunner.

Again, either stick low or high. Obviously better players will lean towards the "high" stack builds, whereas newer players should stick for the easy builds.

Modern Warfare 3 Assault Killstreak Builds - Easy Builds

Out of all the easy killstreak builds in Modern Warfare 3, there is one that really shines through as being one of the best in the game, and that would be selecting a UAV, a Care Package, and a Predator Missile.

Note that this stacks extremely well with the Hardline perk, since it drops the required kills needed for these three rewards from 3, 4, and 5 to 2, 3, and 4, respectively.

You can usually use a UAV to pick off someone nearby, which will get you a Care Package. Care Packages often contain a perk which gets you a kill or more, which can unlock the Predator Missile (which is worth about 1 kill on average; sometimes you get doubles and triples whereas sometimes you get nothing at all). This is a simple way to turn a 2-kill streak into 5 kills, which will really help your K:D ratio.

This build works best for beginners and intermediates. Beginners do not really stand a chance at unlocking anything much better, whereas intermediates can unlock this multiple times in a single game; the cumulative effect of unlocking it multiple times will often be better for your team's success and your personal K:D ratio than unlocking a better killstreak reward once in a blue moon.

I recommend sticking to this build until you hit at least a K:D ratio of 1.25. A lot of players may disagree with me, but the truth is if your K:D ratio is not at least 1.25, you really will not be able to unlock rewards frequently enough to make the most out of anything but this build.

Sure, it is within the realm of possibility that the stars align and you rack up 9 kills to get a Reaper which you chain into other great rewards, but playing 100 games just to get 1 good game is stupid and a waste of your time and your team's time. As you play more you'll get better and you can actually make use of the better rewards.

Let's put it this way - if you are not very good at the game, you will get AC-130s, Pave Lows, Reapers, etc., much more frequently out of the Care Packages with this build than actually racking up the 9-12 kills needed for the big kill streak rewards, so it is actually more fun as well to stick to the easy builds until you get better.

Modern Warfare 3 Assault Killstreak Guide - Intermediate Builds

Once you get a bit better and are able to achieve a higher K:D (about 1.25 is appropriate - any lower and you are better off sticking with the easy build above), you can start picking higher killstreak rewards.

A good intermediate build is Care Package (4 kills) --> Predator Strike (5 kills) --> Reaper (9 kills).

The jump from Predator Strike to Reaper might seem like a lot, but basically alls you need to do is get lucky - about 1/3 of the time you will get a very powerful item from your Care Package which can net you a few kills. Add the Predator Missile into the mix and 1/3 of the time you can chain a 5 kill streak into a 9 kill streak.

The trick is to not run off and throw your Care Package down as soon as you get it. Instead, try to get 5 kills in a row to unlock your Predator Missile. Then, use your Predator Missile first. You can do this by pressing up or down on the directional pad on your controller to cycle through killstreak rewards.

The reason I like to do this is because if you are in a position where you just netted 4 kills in a row, usually it is pretty easy to get 5 or 6. It's better to say in a hot spot than it is to scurry off to drop your Care Package at 4 kills. When you are at 5 or 6 kills, a Care Package Reward + a Predator Missile often carry you to Reaper.

Note: See the next section for info on how to use the Reaper.

If you are struggling with reaching the 9 kills required for the Reaper, you might want to try a slightly easier build, such as Care Package --> Predator Strike --> Attack Helicopter. The only thing is I feel like in Modern Warfare 3 that the Attack Helicopter is very weak and gets shot down very, very easily.

Modern Warfare 3 Assault Killstreak Guide - Advanced Builds

As you get even better at the game, you might try a more advanced build such as:

Care Package --> Reaper --> AC-130

I think that this is the ideal build for great players in MW3. You never know when the Care Package will have a great item inside, and the Reaper and AC-130 are incredibly good.

The trick to this build is having a good enough K:D ratio (at least 1.75) to be able to somewhat regularly unlock the Reaper. Any less than that and even a build like this is a bit over-aggressive.

Why the Reaper and the AC-130? Because if you know what you are doing these are the best perks you can get in any relatively short game (some domination games can last long enough to make bigger killstreaks worthwhile; Deathmatch never lasts long enough). The trick is to understand how to use the Reaper and AC-130.

Using the Reaper

The Reaper fires out missiles which you can control from an air support. Each time you fire a rocket, a red "target" will appear on the ground, You can then move this red target with the joystick, and the rocket will eventually hit the red target. The red target is the "laser guided" aspect of the missile.

After you fire the missile, you will notice a number on the screen. This is the distance from impact. Once this number reaches zero, the missile will hit.

The gimmick is that players can see the red cloud on the ground where the missile will land and will try to take cover. For this reason, you want to start the red cloud slightly behind a player so he can't see it, then as the missile gets close to impact move it underneath or just behind him. The impact radius is pretty big (think Predator Missile), so you do not have to get a direct hit to get a kill.

Also, you can aim (zoom in) by holding down the sights just like you would with a weapon, and you can make the rocket speed up by hitting the trigger button.

Using the AC-130

The AC-130 is like an upgraded Reaper. Its bigger round (105mm) seem to automatically track to the target and there is no mark on the ground. You can fire off these rounds and get so many kills just as they zoom in on players.

However, the AC-130 also has two smaller turrets (25 and 45mm rounds) making it almost like a Chopper Gunner and Reaper combined. Most players only use the larger round, which is a big mistake.

What you want to do is actually fire off a missile, and while the missile is on cooldown, switch over to a smaller round (it is either the change weapon button or a directional pad button - cannot remember) and fire off a few shots. Switch to the next round, fire off a few more shots. Switch back to the bigger round, and then that will be off cooldown. Switching rounds constantly allows you to be always shooting with this weapon.

If you do not switch regularly, you are selling yourself short on a lot of kills with this particular weapon.

Why the Juggernaut & Osprey Gunner Are Not All That Great

The problem with the Juggernaut and Osprey Gunner not that they are not feasible to regularly get, but also because of the time constraints.

Think about it this way - the only game which will ever last long enough to make good use out of most of these killstreaks is Capture the Flag or Domination. Really no other game will go on long enough for you to use these.

You would have to unlock Juggernaut at 15 kills, call it down from a package, secure the package, then actually have a few minutes left in the match to be able to use it. An Osprey Gunner drops care packages, so that would also take time to get the most use out of.

In Team Deathmatch, Ground War Deathmatch, and FFA mode matches (probably these 3 make up about 70% of game going on at any given time), you will just never have enough time to make the most out of these. Half the time you get a big killstreak like this it will be in the middle or at the end of a game.

It is much better to have a killstreak like the Reaper or AC-130 which gives you an instant reward so you can actually end the game with it rather than letting it drag on. Of course, if you are playing Domination, you may want to consider some of these higher-end killstreaks.

Modern Warfare 3 Assault Killstreaks Guide Conclusion

For the most part, the average player using the Assault Package should stick to UAV, Care Package, and Predator Missile. Stack this with Hardline and your K:D ratio will skyrocket. As you get better, try to work on a build that includes the Reaper or AC-130, both of which can often give you 5+ kills once you get good with them.
